Today, WIMN is proud to support "unseenamerica: Beyond The Window," a groundbreaking exhibit by Afghan women photographers, produced by WAW and hosted at the Queens Museum of Art. Museum hours and location, as well as sample photos from the show, are available here. Afghan women's experiences have been discussed and hotly contested in media and American culture since Sept. 11, 2001, but rarely have Afghan women been given spaces to speak for themselves in the public debate about their lives. In "unseenamerica: Beyond the Window," Afghan women from Queens, New York use photography as a means of creative self-expression. Through the exhibit, Afghan women offer a photographic record of their lives, speaking through the lens in their own unique voices. Running through Nov. 24, "unseenamerica: Beyond the Window" helps dissolve myths and stereotypes about Afghan women, who are largely "unseen" beyond their domestic environments. The force behind the project is Women for Afghan Women (WAW), an organization of Afghan and non-Afghan women in the New York area committed to ensuring the human rights of Afghan women. WAW's goal is the empowerment of Afghan women, which means ending the silence and invisibility that have been the most effective tools of their suppression. WAW teaches ESL classes and helps Afghan women navigate their way through daunting housing, health, immigration and educational systems. In recent months WAW's work has been profiled in a variety of news outlets, including Newsday (Oct. 31, 2005 and Sept. 9, 2005), City Limits and Women's eNews. To read more about WAW in the News, visit their press section at womenforafghanwomen.org. Journalists and media producers interested in arranging interviews with WAW or with the Afghan women photographers behind the "unseenamerica" exhibit - or those interested in discussing women's human rights issues in the U.S. and in Afghanistan, are encouraged to contact WAW. Journalists interested in learning more about WIMN, or the Afghan Women's Media Organizing Project, are encouraged to contact WIMN.
